Hi my name is Alondene Phillips and I am a ceramicist, textile artist and print maker working from my home studio in Milton Keynes. As an artist, maker and educator, predominately working with clay, I am interested in how the old and new interact. I use traditional ceramic techniques such as Sgraffito, Mishima and slip trailing in my work, combining these with more modern methods of decorating clay, such as printing on clay using silk screens, stencils and slip transfers to create contemporary ceramic pieces.
My work is not precise in its form. I deliberately make work that is slightly uneven, tilting or has movement designed into its form in order to creates ways of inviting the owner to touch and interact with each piece. The vessels I create are often derived and influenced by my dual heritage and experience of combining cultural traditions and heritage in order to find similarities or explore differences. Coming from a textile design and print background, my work uses texture, colour and pattern as opportunities to heighten the tactile nature of each piece whilst also incorporating and embedding imagery, motifs and storytelling into the surface of the clay.
